Lennart Svensson was a Professor of signal processing with Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. He passed away after a period of illness, supported throughout by his family, friends and colleagues.
He was an enthusiastic, outstanding researcher and teacher in the fields of Bayesian estimation, multiple target tracking and machine learning. He worked on theoretical aspects as well as applied research, with a focus on perception for intelligent vehicles.
He was a keen collaborator, enjoying discussing ideas with other researchers and hearing other people’s points of view. He was a kind and social person that made everyone feel at ease. He also had a unique ability to challenge both himself and others to go into new territory beyond the comfort zone of incremental research. He carried out his research with rigorous mathematics and the ability to explain difficult concepts in easy terms. His outstanding research has been recognised by numerous paper awards (5 of them at the Fusion conference).
As a supervisor, he was equally generous and principled. He taught his students not only how to conduct rigorous research, but also how to pursue it with integrity, fairness, and moral courage. His guidance shaped not only the work of his students, but also the way they approach research and academic life.
His pedagogical skills were highly valued among his students. He won the Chalmers' annual Pedagogical Award and the Electrical Engineering Best Teacher Award for his pedagogical innovations. He was a flipped-classroom pioneer and also developed a massive open online course on multiple target tracking to make this field more accessible to learners.
He also had very broad interests, including sailing, skiing, football, cycling, baking, and learning other languages. He even coached his son’s football team.
In short, Lennart was an outstanding person who will be greatly missed by all of us who were close to him.
